GREEN VISION 2011 Results

Santhosh K.Jana of West Bengal bagged First Prize- (Rs.10000) for his photo titled, ‘ Dogs with Kill’ in the Eighth All India Nature Photographic Competition conducted by Greens, viz GREEN VISION 2011.

B.S.Biju, Thiruvananthapuram and Rithwik- Chennai got Second Prize (Rs.5000) and Third Prize (Rs.3000) (below), respectively.

A total of 362 entries have been received from 90 photographers all over India. The panel of judges consisted of 5 members of eminent nature and wildlife photographers.

The winners will be honoured and the awards will be distributed on 26.11.2011 at the Museum auditorium, Thiruvananthapuram.

Comment of the Jury

The quality of most of the photographs received is outstanding. It was a tough task for the judges to select the best.102 photos were selected in the preliminary round and out this 15 photographs were selected in the second round. Marks were independently awarded to each of the 15 photographs by the jury members and best 8 photographs were selected for awards.

Visitors from Norway

Around 20 unexpected visitors came to watch Greenvision 2010. The damsels were from Norway. All were photography students. They spent more than one and a half hour at the exhibition hall, having discussions on photos. They generously commented on the photographs in the Comment Book also. Merte Haseth, Tonji Elisabeth Sotheim Rynold, Sigrid Lakser Skodvin, Marie Christine Vallestad, Oda Ardrer, Aanda etc. etc. were some of them. Their teacher Trank Dryer Paulson and a guide accompanied them.

Greenvision 2010 Exhibition

Seventh All India Nature Photo Exhibition started at Museum Auditorium on November 4th, 2010 at 10.15 am. The programme will last till 9th. The inauguration was done by Sri. Balan Madhavan, Fellow of International League of Conservation Photographers. Sri. Suresh Elamon attended. The catalogue was released on the occasion by Sri. Balan Madhavan handing over the same to Sri. Suresh Elamon. Every evening, documentaries of various directors will be showed. On 6th, painting competition for school children will be held at 9.30 am at Museum compound. On 9th, at 5.15pm, public meeting will be organised at 5.15 pm. Sri. T.M. Manoharan IAS, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests will be the Chief Guest. Sri. M. Nandakumar IAS, Director Information & Public Relations Department, Sri. Dharreshan Unnithan, Director, Energy Management Centre, Sri. Joseph V. Mathew, DGM, State Bank of Travancore will speak.
Special invitees will hand over prizes to the winners in quiz competitions, poster writing competition, painting competition and All India Nature Photography competition.

Greens, in Association with Energy Management Centre - Kerala, is organising a State level poster designing competition for college students in Kerala. The subject of the competition is, Energy Conservation for the Sustainance of Nature. Cash prizes to the tune of Rs.5000 for first place, Rs.3000 for second place and Rs.2000 for third place will be awarded. There is no restriction on medium used or the size of the canvas. Tree saplings distributed

Greens has distributed 11 varieties of trees including jack-fruit, sandalwood, teak, pomegranate, Indian laburnum, rosewood, guava etc. in the Secretariat free of cost. Greens bought more than 1700 saplings from the outlet of State Forest Department at Neyyattinkara for the distribution. The saplings were distributed in Administrative Secretariat and Legislature Secretariat in one to one manner.

The Greenvision 2009 Nature Phto Exhibition starts tomorrow (19th Wednesday) at Museum Hall, Thiruvananthapuram. The show will be inaugurated by Smt. P. Vijayakumari Amma, Director, Museum. Sri. Joshy Manjummel, Ernakulam, Kerala got first prize in the Greenvision 2009 All India Nature Photo Competition for his photo titled, Drinking. Sri. Aasish Bathery, also from Kerala, got second prize for his photo, Mother and Baby.

Sarvashree Somenath Mukhopadhyay (Larva in Paddy Field), Bidhan Ch. Mondal (Due Hunter), (both from West Bengal), K.M. Narayanaswamy IFS (Pheasant tailed Jacana with chick), (Karnataka), Dr. Kalesh S.(Whispers from a Silent World), (Kerala) and Saikat Ganguly (Playing Mood) (West Bengal) got Consolation Prizes.

Almost all pictures are outstanding. Jury members are unanimous in selecting the prize winning photographs. But are of the opinion that the print quality of 50 per cent of the pictures are poor. Entries regarding wildlife seems insufficient. Almost all pictures are digitally treated.

Neelakkurinji flowers again

T.K. Rajan Memorial Inter School Greens Quiz 2009 became an event in the city with a participation of 83 teams from thirteen leading schools in the district. The big hall of Christ Nagar, Vellayambalam, was filled with participants, their parents and Greens members.

Anand P.V. (8th standard) and Anand Justin (10th standard) of St. Mary’s HSS, Pattom got first place by securing 70 points. The teams of Aryan P. Nair and Arya P.B. (both in 10th standard) of L.V.H.S., Pothencode and Surya Girish (8th standard) and Aravind A.J. (9th standard) of Chinmaya Vidyalaya, Vazhuthacaud shared second place by securing 57.5 points. Devika A. Nair and Ambika M.S. (both in 9th standard) of GGHSS Cottonhill, Vazhuthacaud reached third with 47.5 points.

Other teams which got selection for the final quiz are M. Kavin Das (10th) and Ajay Dev B.G. (10th) of St. Mary’s HSS, Pattom (secured 40 points); Bharath Nandan S.(9th) and Abhijith U. (9th) of St. Mary’s Central School, Poojappura (secured 25 points); Neeraj R. (8th) and Aravind M.R. (8th) of K.V. Pattom, 2nd Shift (secured 20 points) and Arjun Shyam (8th) and Vivek S.(8th) of Loyola School, Sreekaryam (secured 10 points).

Arya Central School, Pattom had the highest participation with 16 teams which was followed by Loyola School, Sreekaryam and Govt. Girls’ HSS, Cottonhill with 11 teams each. St. Thomas Residential School, Mukkolakkal had 10 teams. Other schools participated in the event are: St. Mary’s HSS, Pattom (9), Carmel Girls’ HSS, Vazhuthacaud (5), Darsana HSS, Nedumangad (4 ), Kendriya Vidyalaya, Pattom (4), Holy Angels’ Convent HSS (3), LVHS, Pothencode (3), Chinmaya Vidyalaya, Vazhuthacaud (2) and Nirmala Bhavan, Kuravankonam (1). The host school, Christ Nagar Sr. Secondary School, Vellayambalam had two teams to represent.
Greens Executive Committee Member C. Susheelkumar led the quiz which had visual rounds, plant identification and bird voice identification. Thomas Mash of Christ Nagar, Vellayambalam, extended all supports from the part of the School Management.

World Environmental Day Activities

Greens celebrated this year's environmental day with Museum & Zoo Department and Forest Department. In the morning painting competitions were conducted at the Museum Radio Park for LP, UP and High School students. At 3 pm, Education Minister, Mr. M.A. Baby and Forest Minister, Mr. Binoy Viswom, inaugurated the 'Haritha Keralalm' (Green Kerala) programme by planting tree saplings at museum ground. Mayor, Mr. Jayan Babu, was also present. Students from Cotton Hill School, Vazhuthacaud and members of Greens participated.

Subsequent to this, 1000 tree saplings of various kinds were issued to the Secretariat employees. The inauguration of this was done by Forest Minister at the Secretariat Campus by giving a sandalwood sapling to the daughter of Greens member Mrs. Sheela.

Result of Inter Institutional Greens Quiz 2009

The team of Sri. Shaju P.K. and Sri. Ajith Kollasserry, Government Secretariat won first prize in the Inter Institutional Greens Quiz 2009 by securing 77.5 marks.

Dr. Bijukumar, Head of Aquatic Biology Department, University of Kerala led the quiz.

Sri. Anil Kumar K.S. and Smt. Snju V. Asokan of Public Relations Department comprise the team that secured second place with 52.5 marks in total. Sri. Balu John and Sri. Rendhir R. Prasad, Government Engineering Colllege reached third by collecting 45 marks.

Sri. C. Suseelkumar conducted the preliminary round to select seven teams for the final competition.

Nature watch ‘Haimavatha Bhoovil’ captures the many faces and phases of the Himalayas

It will be a while before the sun tears away the cloak of snow spread out on the Himalayas. As summer blazes ahead, the magnificent heights and the cavernous rocky overhangs will break out of the wintry haze. Then, hikers of Greens, an environmental collective of Secretariat employees, will wait for pleasant weather in the latter part of the year for the ascent.

In the previous years, their backpacks on the way home had rolls of used film. Last week, the yield of some of those films were exhibited at the Museum Auditorium, at an exhibition titled ‘Haimavatha Bhoovilude’ (In the Himalayan terrain).

The photographs shot in the crisp mountain air, not overly raw or of the finest professional quality, compress well the majesty of the mighty mountains and life in that rarefied climes in multidimensional prints. They were all developed from film and not airbrushed.
Study in contrasts

Some yellowing prints go back more than a decade and when the same vistas appear in more recent photos, a grim then-and-now statement of receding glaciers, denuded hills and lost charms strike gloom. So the grainy old prints have richer content.

The Gomukh Glacier shot in 2003 is vastly different from that snapped in 1999. Most other Himalayan glaciers and rivers seem to be losing their way, and Greens did well to include a footnote on the doom playing out in the mountains.

Then, there are the yak and the mithun, that seem to be hanging on despite the changing terrain. But snaps of the placid Dal Lake and the giggling flowers of Gulmarg bring back cheer.

A shot of the confluence of the Bhagirathi and the Mandakani at Devprayag has a shimmering, racy quality to it. Most unfamiliar were the photographs of Arunachal Pradesh. The hikers have gone deep into the villages and portrayed life there. Stupendous snaps of Ladakh and Leh seem to be the prized collections.

Some photographs have fixed their focus on Hindu rituals at Rishikesh and Varanasi. On the way out of the hall was a collection of photos that prick the seemingly impervious nature of the mountains. Greens has not got the bright flowers identified, but these are sparkling and colourful.

The Himalayan mountain ranges is something more than a mere geographical area as far as Indians are concerned. This stands as rich presence beyond spirituality and intellectual evaluations. Greens is organising a photo exhibition of the Mighty Himalayas at Museum Auditorium, Thiruvananthapuram during 25 to 28 February, 2009. The photographs taken by Greens Members, describing vividly the versatility of Himalayan mountain ranges are exhibited in the event titled as Haimavatha Bhooviloode. All are wholeheartedly invited to participate this event.

Guidelines for conducting the
Programme

I. The painting competition may be conducted on or before 15.08.2008 and the best five entries have to be sent to our office on or before 20.08.2008.
II. The final selection will be from among all the entries from the State (5 from each district).
III. From these, 20-25 best ones will be short listed and invited to Thiruvananthapuram for another painting competition among them and the first three will be chosen for awards.
IV. Any colouring medium can be used and the paper size for painting is A3.
V. The award (Ist prize – Rs.5000/ + Certificate; IInd prize – Rs.3000/ + Certificate; IIIrd prize – Rs.2000/ + Certificate) for the winners will be given away by the Honourable Minister for Forests in a function at VJT Hall, Thiruvananthapuram on 31st August 2008 organised by the GREENS.

INTER-INSTITUTIONAL GREENS QUIZ, 2008

Greens, the Nature lovers’ forum in the Government Secretariat, proposes to conduct an Inter–Institutional Quiz Competition for the Employees of the State and Central Government/ Semi Government/Public Sector Undertakings including Banks functioning in Thiruvananthapuram district. The application form given below may be downloaded for applying. Rules and other details are followed below the application

RULES AND REGULATIONS

1. It is a team quiz consisting of Two Members in each team and the subjects are Nature, Environment and life science
2. There shall be a written test in the preliminary round. SIX teams will be selected for the final round.
3. Each team shall bring identification documents from the Head of their Institutions to prove their identity in the format attached.
4. Cash prize will be awarded to the first, second and third places
5. The secretariat staff who are interested to take part in the competition, may register their names before the Secretary GREENS, on or before 5.00 pm on 19.04.2008
6. The written preliminary round will be held at 3 PM on 22.04 08 (Tuesday) at Museum Auditorium, Thiruvananthapuram and thereafter the final round will be held in the same venue.
7. The team shall report at the venue half an hour before the preliminary round.
8. The final Quiz will be bilingual i.e. in English and Malayalam
9. In case of dispute, regarding the Quiz Competition, the decision of the Quiz Master and GREENS shall be final.

Dharna against Athirappilly Hydro Electric Project

Twelve environmental activist groups in Thiruvananthapuram staged a dharna in front of the State Secretariat, demanding withdrawal from the proposed Athirappilly Hydro-Electric Project by the State Electricity Board.

The dharna was inaugurated by famous poetess and environmental activist Smt. Sugathakumari this morning. Eminent political leader Sri. V.M. Sudheeran, a crusader in the mineral soil issue in Alappuzha, attended the function and expressed his solidarity in this issue which gave a boost to the protest.

Pal Pandian explains to RAJEEV G.R. how Koonthakulam was turned into a haven for birds

Even in the early 1990s, anyone killing birds or stealing eggs at Koonthakulam had their heads tonsured and was ostracised for the transgression. Others may call it crude, but for the villagers, it is their love for the birds that had made them resort to such methods.

After the Tamil Nadu Forest Department made the village, about 150 km from Thiruvananthapuram city, on the Nagarcoil-Tirunelveli road, a bird sanctuary, such practises have ended.

Love for birds

Showering love on the birds, which come from foreign shores and various parts of the country, is a tradition at Koonthakulam.

Leading the villagers in this endeavour is Pal Pandian, now a birdwatcher with the Forest Department in the sanctuary. Pandian was in the city this week to inaugurate World Environment Day celebrations of Greens (Group Endeavour for Environment and Nature Sustenance), an environmental organisation of Secretariat employees.

Fame sits lightly on this unassuming man, whose eyes glint when speaking about the feathered creatures. Back home, he has asked his wife to take care of the birds in his absence.

Nurturing the birds is a fulltime passion for him. To enable this, he left a steady job in Mumbai and sold his wife's ornaments. "The birds are like children to us," he says.

The village stands in sharp relief against nesting grounds abandoned by the birds owing to pollution and encroachment of wetlands. If the birds find Koonthakulam hospitable, the credit goes to the villagers, for whom protecting weaker species is a divine call. Even the village temple abjures firecrackers and loudspeakers so that the birds are undisturbed.

When fledglings fall in their first flights, Pandian and other villagers rush to them and nurse them till wings flutter again.

Birdwatchers have been flocking to this idyllic village, and Pandian has been kindling their interest with his chemistry with the birds. Even flamingos from the Rann of Kutch had been spotted here, which is unusual, he says.

Pelicans, storks, ibises, cormorants and egrets warm the hearts of bird lovers at Koonthakulam. Ground nesting birds such as lapwings and plovers are also seen. Migratory birds flock to the sanctuary from November to April.

Pandian lavishes praise on wildlife photographers and birdwatchers from Kerala for helping this sanctuary gain attention worldwide.

Greens is organising programmes on Neelakurinji

MYSTICAL FLOWER Neelakurinji blooms only one in 12 years

With the mountain ranges near Munnar and the Nilgiris blossoming in the blue and white of Neelakurinji (Strobilanthes kunthiana), Greens (Group Endeavour for Environment and Nature Sustenance), an environmental organisation of Secretariat employees, is holding a bouquet of programmes on this mystical flower, which blooms only once in 12 years.
The events start at V.J.T. Hall on World Environment Day on June 5. Bal Pandiyan, a saviour of migratory birds at Koonthakulam, a haven of feathered visitors, near Valliyoor, on the Nagarcoil-Tirunelveli road, will inaugurate the Environment Day programmes at 10 a.m.
Accepted entries to a nature photography contest organised by Greens will be on display from Monday.
A World Environment Day conference will be held from 5 p.m. on the inaugural day. Chief Minister of Kerala V.S. Achuthanandan will inaugurate the meeting. Sugathakumari, poet and environment activist, and M. Baba, Director of Centre of Earth Sciences Studies, will participate.
Fresh from a `Save Kurinji Campaign' in Munnar in May to conserve the shola forests, held along with a few other environmental organisations, activists of Greens are organising a `Kurinji Sandhya' on June 6.

A carpet of flowers

Earlier that day, an exhibition of photographs, taken since 1982, will show glimpses of these flowers weaving a carpet on the mountains. Pictures taken since 1982 will be on show.
Munnar Divisional Forest Officer will inaugurate the `Kurinji Sandhya.' Jomy Augustine, faculty member from St. Thomas College, Pala, will speak on Neelakurinjis and their impact on the ecosystem. Dr. Augustine has directed documentaries on eco issues, such as `Kerala - a Garden of Eden.' K. Kunhikrishnan, who teaches at University College, will give a demonstration on Neelakurinjis and Shola forests with the help of slides.
The final day of the Environment Day celebrations will see a gathering of representatives of green organisations from all over Kerala discussing the threats to the environment in the State.
"We will even the discuss the Koodamkulam nuclear power project in Tamil Nadu, which will have an impact on the environment of the southern districts of Kerala. Another topic is `Deserts and desertification,' the theme of World Environment Day 2006," says K. Muraleedharan Nair, president of Greens.
A painting contest will be held for lower and upper primary school children on June 5. The contest will be held for high school students the following day.
The valedictory programme will be inaugurated by Minister for Forests Benoy Viswom.

Green Vision 2007

Under the title ‘Green Vision’, three day long nature photo/ poster exhibition and National Level Nature Photography Competition are being conducted annually. The photographs and posters in GREENS’ collection are also exhibited in the programmes conducted in colleges, schools and residence associations in Kerala as part of the awareness campaigns.

The competition carries a prize money of Rs.5000 for first place, Rs.3000 for second, Rs.1000 each as consolation prize for five persons and 5 certificates of merit. All winners will be awarded with a magnificent citation.
